RE: Distance Scale

MeatShieldNZ, you are doing substantial research on weapon effects to achieve more realism in the mod. I appreciate your effort.
My primary query was the matter of scale. My secondary question was whether the mod team intended to portray weapon ranges in relative comparison to each other versus adjusted for balance. For the mod, I would recommend the common effective range be used. However, not all weapons types can be displayed on the same scale but can be displayed on the same scale by series. For example, most WWII rifles had an effective range of 500m. That equals so many pixels of map, I would think. Artillery, however, have ranges in the thousands of meters and using the same scale as for the rifles would result in all artillery being able to range the whole map. So maybe infantry weapons (rifles, MGs, SMGs, and pistols) are shown in relation to one another at a 5% scale of their real world effective range. Maybe mortars and small artillery are shown at only 2-3 % and large artillery at only 0.2%. While it would be ideal to have every weapon on the same scale, I don't think that practicable.
To my mind, the key to to have each weapon type in a relative scale to all the other weapons of the same type and for all effects. Relic and some mods have reduced the effective range and accuracy of the M1 Garand, for example, to achieve better balance, believing bolt action rifles as more accurate at distance. The data does not support that position. The rate of fire for the Garand was also double that of a bolt action rifle but Relic and most mods have reduced that as well. The same argument applies to the Soviet SVT-40.
German tactical doctrine had their riflemen as supporting cover and ammo bearers for MGs, not as the primary offensive power. Semi-automatic rifles were less important to them. US doctrine had the riflemen at the center of their fire and maneuver tactics with MGs in the supporting role. US infantry were the only WWII force equipped with semi-automatic rifles as the standard infantry rifle. Opposing forces with opposing doctrines and tactical practices. Establishing the proper relationship among the mod's weapons enhances the portrayal of the tactics that made those weapons effective.
